Juan Atkins często bywa nazywany ojcem chrzestnym Detroit Techno. Na początku lat 80-tych stworzył z Richardem Daviesem alias 3070 duet Cybotron, którego utwory właściwie zapoczątkowały Detroit Techno, a tytuł jednego z nich, „Motor City”, stał się hasłem określającym nurt. Można śmiało stwierdzić, że gdyby nie Juan, nie byłoby tej całej materii jaką teraz słyszymy i nazywamy "techno".

Historia zaczyna się w latach siedemdziesiątych kiedy jako nastolatek interesował się tworzeniem muzyki, kupił gitarę basową i eksperymentował z automatem perkusyjnym swojego brata. Następnie kupił syntezator Korg MS-10 i coraz bardziej zagłębiał się w różnych dziwnych elektronicznych dźwiękach. W tym okresie słuchał głównie Milesa Davisa, Sly & Robbie a potem The Parliament, Funkadelic. Zarówno Atkins, jak i pozostali artyści definiując swe inspiracje, powołują się na długo emitowaną w Detroit audycję radiową Charlesa "Electrifyin' Mojo" Johnsona.



Fascynację tą muzyką podzielili z nim także szkolni przyjaciele - Derrick May i Kevin Saunderson, którzy dopiero rozpoczynali swoje eksperymenty z elektronicznymi dźwiękami. Atkins nigdy nie poddał się schematom – na przestrzeni lat jego muzyka ewoluowała w kierunku przestrzenności dźwiękowej ambientu, by dotrzeć wreszcie do „czystego” techno.

Każde kolejne nagranie Atkinsa dołącza do klasyki muzyki elektronicznej. Dziś Juan Atkins uważany jest za jedną z najważniejszych postaci tego gatunku a jego występy to obowiązkowy punkt dla fanów Detroit Techno na całym świecie.

22 maja bedzie to jego pierwszy klubowy występ w naszym kraju, dotychczas moglismy go usłyszec tylko na popularnych festiwalach, ale tylko... raz.

Należy zauważyć, że kolejnym atutem tego wydarzenia jest silny suport, oprócz chłopaków z Undergorund Perception, zagra Echoplex – jeden z rdzeni polskiej sceny elektronicznej, a także Dtekk – współtwórca kolektywu Technosoul i organizator osławionych imprez spod szyldu Secret Location. Poniżej krótko i na temat o artystach:

Echoplex to postać znana na światowej arenie klubowej. Jego niezapomniane live akty sięgają raczkującej sceny techno w Polsce oraz pierwszych imprez w klubach jak Blue Velvet, Trend, Eskulap, Huta, Grota, Souxie Towers czy Akademia.
Echoplex grał w najważniejszych klubach w Polsce oraz brał udział w takich wydarzeniach muzycznych jak:Creamfields 2003 (Ustronie Morskie), Astigmatic, Soundtropolis, Rittmaticca, Parada Miłości w Łodzi czy festiwalu tam gdzie biją źródła.

Dtekk to ten jedne z niewielu djów młodego pokolenia, który silnie wspiera starą – dobrą szkołę techno, bezpretensjonalne sety i niesamowite umiejętności przy organizowaniu wszelakiej maści eventów, czynią go jedną z największych postaci/dj we wschodniej Polsce.

Wrapping up 2009... pt. 2

Various Production/Gerry Mitchell - The Invisible Lodger
Various Production has always been bit of hits'n'misses for me. I love their take on modern folk (magnificent track "Home" is the best example), enjoy some of their dubstep... but can't really stand their excursions towards pop music. However, with this album they completely got me. Since Tricky's "Angels With Dirty Faces" no other album has reached me in this way - apocalyptic fin de siecle at it's finest. The LP wouldn't be halfway that good if it wasn't for Gerry Mitchell - Scotish poet, performer, musician. This guy has a better voice than David Sylvian, mark my words!


Bullion - Young Heartache
While 2008 was definitely Fly-Lo's year, the most interesting hip hop (nu hip hop?) stuff in '09 was provided by Brits. Alongside Jamie Vex'D "In System Travel", this is probably the freshest British take on hip hop of the last year. 4 quality tracks, wicked sampling (best in ages!) and this GROOVE! Furthermore, 'Long promised' is one of the most beautiful soulful tracks of this decade.


Planetary Assault Systems - Temporary Suspension LP
It's been so long since Luke has released PAS full LP so I didn't know what to expect from this one. As soon as I heard the previews I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. Paradoxally, I like this LP so much because it partly sounds as if it was produced in the late 90ies. On the other hand, it's quite obvious, as I love Luke's stuff from the 90ies and hate 90% of what he did between 2002-2008. As the next Mote-Evolver is gonna be PAS once again, I hope he sticks to this direction for longer. But why oh why there are only 6 tracks on the 12" edition?


Pepe Bradock - Swimsuit Issue 1789
2009 was a very good year for house music - if it was Terre Thaemlitz who delivered the best album of the genre, then the title of best house EP goes to Pepe Bradock. Both main tracks are typical of Bradock, yet I consider it to be the best Atavisme release so far.
Bradock has always seemed to me as the missing link between US house a la Theo Parrish and French aesthetics - think early Daft Punk.

2nd II None - Waterfalls (Peverelist Rmx)
Basically, the track was made in 2008. I was after it for many months before it was actually released in April '09. It must be my favourite dubstep track so far. Love the way it builds its tension, starts off as a fairly calm one... and then the arpeggio comes in and makes me wanna jump at walls.
Pevie delivered lots of wicked stuff in '09, including his debut LP. He didn't manage to beat dis rmx tho.

Wrapping up 2009... pt. 1

Personally, I consider 2009 to be a year of musical disappointments. And it's not because there were no good releases - quite on the contrary, I bought a huge number of quality stuff. The thing is, almost none of them I find touching enough to put onto my "favourite records ever" shelf. Either it is 'craftmanship replacing art' or me getting old... Despite all of that, my list of finest records of 2009 wasn't easy to pick at all; the first part of the result of my brainstorm lies ahead.

Monolake - Silence
Quite an obvious choice, as Mr Henke is my favourite producer. This is his darkest album so far, whether to call it the best I will decide in some time... But after a bit disappointing Atlas/Titan this is a solid proof that Monolake is back in shape.


Dj Sprinkles – Midtown 120 Blues
My friend brought my attention to this LP in December, few weeks before it was chosen as LP of the year by RA. I was really angry with myself, having missed this excellent release (more like – a series of vinyl releases which are now mostly impossible to get) earlier. Terre Thaemlitz is undoubtedly one of those unique artists who turn everything they touch into pure gold. There were plenty of quality deep house releases in 2009 (plenty of crap as well), but none of them gets even close to this one. And hey, Mule Japan guys, the world neeeds a repress!!!

Shackleton - 3 EPS
Since the closure of Skull Disco, Sam and Laurie have moved on. Both of them have their hits and misses, but I've been watching closely what they're coming out with and Perlon release is Sam's highlight so far. This ain't dubstep (well, another thing is - was it ever dubstep?) nor techno, it's pure Shackleton style. Eerie, oriental, tribal, dark, haunted... It's all there. A must!

Ancient Methods – Third Method
2009 was a good year for Ancient Methods boys, two of their own releases plus split EP on RSB and a collab with Regis on Downwards. First time I heard Third Method was a few weeks before it was officialy out and I was immediately enchanted. 'Else (Radio Edit)' is one of the best 'evil-techno' tracks of this millennium, and rest of the tracks is wicked as well. Can't wait for more!

Sigha - Expansions
Scuba's Hotflush II label is doing better and better at filling gaps between dubstep and techno. I know that very many 'Best of 2009' charts have Joy Orbison's 'Hyph Mngo' right on the top (which ain't a surprise, as it's absolutely wicked), but I found Sigha's release the highlight. Having debuted with this one, he managed to attract my attention immediately and that's why I consider him to be number one among new faces of 2009. 'Expansions' is raw, yet subtle, and each time I play it it manages to hypnotize me so that I can't resist but to listen till the very end. The other three releases he's put out this year are also stunning and something tells me the best is still ahead, so watch out for this guy!

ESSENCE
